Fireproof Safes: Protecting Documents and Media from Fire
No safe is truly "fireproof" — but a fire-rated safe keeps its interior below the temperature at which paper chars or data media fail, for a tested length of time. Here is how to read fire ratings and choose the right protection for your home.
How a fire-resistant safe works
Fire safes use insulating fill (often gypsum-based or composite) between an outer and inner wall. When heated, the fill releases moisture and slows heat transfer, keeping the interior cool for a rated period. A seal around the door keeps out smoke and hot gases; many models also expand an intumescent seal in a fire.
UL 72 ratings

Each class also has a duration, for example Class 350 1-Hour or Class 125 2-Hour. Some UL 72 tests add an explosion hazard test and a drop (impact) test, which simulate a safe falling through a burning floor.
EN 1047-1 and EN 15659
- EN 15659 — LFS 30P / LFS 60P. "Light fire storage" units protecting paper for 30 or 60 minutes. A good entry level for documents.
- EN 1047-1 — S 60P, S 120P. Paper protection for 60 or 120 minutes with an interior limit of 170 °C.
- EN 1047-1 — S 60DIS, S 120DIS. Data media protection with a limit of 50 °C and 85% relative humidity — the stricter class needed for digital storage.
Paper vs digital media
Paper starts to discolor and char above roughly 350–400 °F (177–204 °C), which is why paper classes set the limit at 350 °F / 170 °C. Flash drives, hard disks, photos and film can be ruined at much lower temperatures and by steam. If you store data:
- choose a safe rated UL Class 125 or EN 1047-1 DIS, or
- place a certified media chest inside a paper-rated fire safe, and
- keep an encrypted off-site or cloud backup — no safe replaces a backup.
Fire safe vs burglary safe
Many inexpensive fire safes have thin steel walls and simple locks and can be pried open in minutes. The most reliable home setup is a combination safe with a burglary rating (see security ratings) and a fire rating from the same certified manufacturer.
How to choose a fire safe
- Choose at least 60 minutes of protection; 90–120 minutes if your local fire response time is long.
- Match the class to your contents (paper vs media).
- Prefer ground-floor or basement installation where fire temperatures are typically lower.
- Check water resistance if flooding or firefighting water is a concern.
- Anchor it — a fire safe that is carried away offers no protection.
Care and moisture
Fire insulation can release moisture into the interior over time. Use a silica-gel desiccant, open the safe regularly and keep sensitive items in sealed bags. After a fire, let the safe cool completely (often 24 hours or more) before opening it, as opening a hot safe can let in oxygen and damage the contents.
